Travel day to Mt Saint Michel
16 juni 2015 - Le Mont-Saint-Michel, Frankrijk
June 18th
The first thing we saw when we woke up was…RAIN. Or actually a grey sky. Shall we sleep just a little bit longer I asked? Alex quickly agreed and there we were in dreamland again. Around 8:45 it was time to pack our things because of the rain we didn’t do breakfast but just drove towards Mt. St. Micheal.
Right before we arrived we stopped at a picnic place and as I am writing this Alex is making lunch in the cold, sideways raining, open air while I am sitting in the warm car. Im a terrible friend! Or we can also say Alex is the nicest person ever. Shhh don’t tell her. Haha
After the rain/wind storm of making soup we were ready for some cards and a nap already. Yikes. After what seems like so many days of travel and now with rain we are moving a little bit slower but the good thing is we have time. By taking a couple months for this journey we have time to take things slow. It was great, Syl peed in nature again this time with many caravans around. (Why don't we still have any pictures in action
Then onto the last 11km to Mt. St. Michels. It took some time to find a campsite as we don’t think they have a free place so we settled on a nice one for 16.96 euro. Which for the amount of things you get is very cheap. We may have our first warm shower in Normandy! It has a pool, will report on that later on.
Stay tuned for more!
As we promised:
We were feeling sluggish so wanted to take a shuttle closer but that doesn’t run anymore so we walked the 4km to a stunning castle/abbey built within a rock island. The walk and talk seemed to wake us up.
The abbey has seen many changes and additions throughout its history. Most significant was the ability to withstand the English attack during the 100 years war. This helped to dub it for the patron saint of knights St. Michel. There is a gold statue dedicated to him adorning the top of the abbey. It was real cold.
My favorite room of the abbey was the garden that was on the second floor yet had an open ceiling like it was suspended in the sky. Needing a snack after walking the abbey and the small town we decided to wait til 7pm for the restaurants to re-open. Everything is closed for an hour mid day. We thought that being by the sea we needed mussels…and fries. This is where we found out Alex loves food more than most things.
Now that we had our snack it was time to make the trek back. We decided to take the short shuttle bus ride over the bridge walkway cause that would cut a km off our walk. On our walk to the shuttle bus on the walkway we were able to see the tide change. Actually pretty fast. The bus did not depart on time so we had plenty of time to see how the tide was changing and the pattern of the water. We were not unhappy about that, it was actually very cool to watch.
Still we had a 40 minutes or so walk back to go. Possibly less but felt like more.
No more food for us! Dishes by Alex and Syl set up the car. While we were about to go in our little bunngalo of a car we saw the sky got an amazing orange color. So we did what we had to do and jumped back in the car and raced to the Mount St. Michel again to see the peaceful sunset. It is getting boring to read maybe but I am happy to spend all those days with Alex.
Alex says about sunsets “ I love sunsets. It’s a good time to reflect on the day. It is so simple yet so beautiful.”
Tips:
There are only two campsites close to Mount Saint Michel, as far as we know. The one we were, we could stay with our car and tent, but knowing us we slept in the car anyway.
We finaly could get a warm shower and could see how normal travelers lived.
